In line with goal 5 (gender equality) and 6 (reduced inequality) of the United nation sustainable development goals and the initiative of PYAfrica anti violence committee which seeks to end violence against children and adolescents, the Ojoo catchment of Oyo state chapter of PYAfrica anti violence committee held a sensitization on sexual abuse at Abadina College, university of Ibadan on Thursday, 10th January, 2018.
The sensitization led by the team lead of Ojoo catchment, Mr Dare Oladele, captured over 250 male and female students of the senior secondary school class (SSS) 1 – 3 between the age range of 13 and 19 years. The 30 minutes sensitization was anchored by Mr Dare being the only representative of PYAfrica present.
As an index of the alarming rate of violence against children and adolescents in the society, no less than half the student population indicated they have heard of sexual abuse but unfortunately only a few knows how to avoid and report it. Students were successfully enlightened on the meaning of sexual abuse, how to avoid it, how to report it and its long term effect if not stopped.
The impact of the sensitization include increased awareness of sexual abuse, improved knowledge of how to handle it and preparedness of students not only to guard themselves against it but to also educate their friends and loved ones.
